I have been thinking about my definition of Product Manager and the more I think, I am realizing that this craft requires a lot of different skills. What do I mean by that. Let's see- Product manager may fall in different categories:-
B2B Product Manager-example - ServiceNow, WebEx, MS teams
B2C Product Manager- example WhatsApp, Expedia, Yelp, music streaming apps
PM for internal teams- Building products for Internal Applications- Example, may be using SFDC to build a portal for sales team or underwriting team and so on..
I think depending on the type of Product Manager, one may need to have different skills or rather some skills become important than others. For example managing deadlines may be more critical in B2B vs Internal teams. So, how should I define a "Product Manager". In my mind, a Product Manager is a problem solver who can take a problem and work methodically to build the right solution and in the process he/she will work with stakeholders, business partners, engineers, designers, legal, marketing and so many other teams.
Product Manager needs to have vision, goals, metrics and will do anything to successfully meet the goals.
Some of the things it will require customer validation, market research, hypothesis validation, building MVP, building the product, launching the product, maintaining the product, upgrading the product or may be sunsetting the product. Here's what I have read on how successful product manager define the craft :-
